While I don't care for Horror films, for some reason I have a great affection for the old Hammer films. Vincent Price, anyone? So I'm going to keep an eye on this publisher's titles. Thanks for the tip.

I had not idea of the Hammer Imprint story I was just planning on buying this book anyway because Im such a fan of Dunmore and Ghost stories. Releasing their debut which just happens to be a big name writer was a smart move and good luck to them.

I just read Zennor in Darkness by Dunmore which I liked as much as The Siege. They are very different but worth reading. Two days ago I saw this book at a book shop and was slightly puzzled to see it in the horror section. I didn't have the time to browse but was very curious why it was there. Now I know. I'm very tempted to read this, to see how she does in this genre. I'm very glad you reviewed it.

Hi Guy - sorry for not responding earlier. A bit busy at the moment. I think you'll like this one and although its an earlier work its up to the usual standard of this exceptional writer

I have only begun "The Snows of Yesteryear," but it is clearly the work of a first-rate, perhaps even Great Writer. The section, "Cassandra," is absolutely magnificent I am a great "fan" of the Austro-Hungarian diaspora (Zweig, Joseph Roth, Musil, et al), and von Rezzori seems to me to fit quite comfortably in their company. I say this without having read his novels (they are en route), but I'm confident I won't be disappointed. He is a superb structuralist, and to me, a lapsed screenwriter, that is an essential for great writing.

Hello Tom: I hadn't seen any blog posts via my e-mail lately and wondered if you were on holiday, so I came to check. I'm resubscribing as I must have been bumped off or something.

Anyway, I just finished Humiliated and Insulted and bought this one about a week ago.

I went through a big Russian phase with Dostoevsky, Turgenev etc & really loved them, so this appeals, the most Russian book I read recently was Olga Grushin's The Dream Life of Sukhanov, which had all those elements I loved in the originals.

You make a very good point -- Dostoevsky is excellent at capturing minor "moments" and then expanding them in his shorter works. I haven't read this one, but certainly will. And I confess to a being a serious fan of his "big" books -- I have been rereading them in the last few years and only have The Brothers Karamzov to go.
