[...] A Common Reader reviews All Men are Liars (due to be released September 24, 2010) by Alberto Manguel. I have had Manguel’s non-fiction books on reading and libraries on my to be read list and I am now eagerly awaiting his debut novel. A journalist interviews four people about a writer who seems to have jumped from a building and died with each interviewee providing a different perspective. The premise reminds me of Summertime by Coetzee which I really enjoyed.
This sounds really interesting. My mother and I have been talking about memory and differences in perspectives as my brother and I have very different perspectives of our childhood and it is because we had different experiences as well as different reactions to the same stimulus. This book reminds me in part of Summertime by Coetzee which I loved so I am looking forward to reading it.

Thanks for the review.

Sally - thanks for that. An interesting perspective! Re "And someone asked him if he exaggerated what was in the male mind, and his reply was that it was all this and more" - I think he spoke for himself there - this male mind found the whole thing quite an alien way of thinking

Tom, I am with Kimbofo - I'm a 4th generation Aussie who is growing increasingly ashamed of much of the behaviour I see in some of our suburbs, which I think this book depicts perfectly. So many people have commented to me that they are pleased to see someone finally writing about it so that a dialogue can be started. And when I heard Tsiolkas speak about The Slap at last year's Melbourne Writers Festival he didn't deny that it was misogynistic so I think he has been misreported. And someone asked him if he exaggerated what was in the male mind, and his reply was that it was all this and more.

[...] I really enjoyed this book as I had an earlier HeinI d read , there is a seamless quality to the narrator he seems to jump from teens to women and men with much ease ,the story is more a story for the whole of east germany post ww2 and the people from east germany that on a certain level have struggled to cope with reunification ,we see the danger and corruption via the smuggling Bernhard does and also the fact at one point he is blackmailed ,the mess of post war germany is touched families spilt removed from the areas of Poland they had settled in forced back to germany like Bernhard yet view by the locals as unworthy .the translation is very good but it has been listed for a couple of prizes like IMPAC already so must be good .Tom at a common reader also reviewed this book a while ago here is his view .
It's a hard life I can tell! Thanks for sharing ... it's lovely every now and then hearing about other parts of book bloggers lives, particularly when accompanied by photos as tempting as these.

Messing about on the river: bliss! Nearly bought a narrow boat to live on, once; but decided was more of a dry bob. The, er, diver is very clearly a wet one ... Look forward to your views on the items in the current TBR pile. Bon weekend, Tom et famille!
